BROWSER-LOCAL · DECODED RGBA COLORS
Pixel art palette extractor
Count the exact decoded colors in a static PNG. Choose how transparency is counted, then download a swatch and JSON report.
Choose which pixels count
Visible RGBA mode includes pixels whose alpha is greater than zero and excludes fully transparent pixels. All RGBA mode includes every decoded pixel. Both modes compare all four channels exactly, so the same RGB with two alpha values counts as two entries.
The report separates opaque, partially transparent and fully transparent pixel totals. Entries are sorted by pixel count, then RGBA value. The tool accepts at most 256 included RGBA colors; it rejects a larger palette instead of reducing or merging colors.
Read the swatch with its report
Each swatch cell represents one reported RGBA entry. Partially transparent cells retain that alpha, so their displayed color depends on the background. An all-transparent image in visible mode has no included entries and no swatch PNG; its JSON still explains the result.
Decoded colors have a browser boundary
The counts describe browser-decoded pixels, not untouched source-file bytes or an indexed PNG table. Canvas conversion can round partial-alpha channels and discard invisible RGB or PNG metadata. Keep your original file and compare alpha as well as RGB when diagnosing unexpected counts.
Use the exact palette swapper to replace explicitly chosen RGBA values without palette reduction.
Input and export limits
Choose one static PNG up to 10 MiB. Animated PNGs are rejected. Geometry, color count, encoded output and conservative memory limits apply. Image processing stays on this device; no account or image upload is required.
Download the report, any generated swatch, the geometry manifest or their ZIP. A rejected or cancelled job exposes no partial export.
Use the twelve-color palette example or compare visible and all-pixel counts before interpreting your own PNG.
? QUESTIONS
- Why can equal RGB values count as different colors?
- The comparison includes alpha. Two decoded pixels with equal RGB but different alpha are distinct RGBA entries. Visible mode excludes only fully transparent pixels.
- Will it reduce a PNG to 256 colors?
- No. The tool counts at most 256 included RGBA colors and rejects a larger palette. It does not merge, approximate or quantize source colors.
